Perhaps with the 6 flower gardens including Sunken Garden, Concert Lawn Walk, Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, Italian Garden and the Mediterranean Garden, Jennie Butchart - the brains that created the Gardens over a hundred years ago - has shown the world that the incredible autumn season is not as bleak as it seems.

The Ultimate Autumn Experience at Butchart Gardens

Autumn in the northern hemisphere is usually an unwelcome season. The sun is not as warm as in summer, the leaves on the trees will have started littering people’s backyards, the summer bloom will be waning fast and there is a sad reality that the best of times have passed.

Have you noticed that there is no song writer who speaks about autumn in his songs? There will be lots of poems about spring - it is the start of summer and the end of winter, there will be all kind of festivals during summer - it is the people's favorite, even winter will get a mention - mostly because of Christmas. However, people do not like autumn. But what's not to like? You have never been to Butchart Gardens, the place where autumn comes to life. Like all the late blooming teenagers, autumn blooming flowers are the most beautiful. They are special because they take their time and they are rare since their contemporaries will be quickly decaying.

Welcome to Butchart Gardens, a place that receives more than a million visitors annually.

You can expect to see the late blooming shrubs, trees, annual flowering plants, Domed Children’s pavilion, totem poles and 30-hand-carved animals in Sunken Garden and Concert Lawn Walk. In the Rose Garden, you get to see the varieties of the flower of ‘love’. From the Pacific Giant Roses to the Hybrid Tea Roses, the dynamism created here is almost magical. Past the Torri gate, you will be entering the Japanese Garden - Jennie’s best work. She created this garden with the help of her assistant and landscaper, one Isaburo Kishida, a gardening genius of Japanese origin. The garden was completed in 1906. Apart from the delights of the Japanese garden, you can see the 12-point pond in the Italian garden as well as the Florentine and Piazza Bronze statute depicting Tacca the Boar in the Mediterranean Garden.

If you know of a place on earth that has been artificially created and is more beautiful than the Butchart Gardens, I would be happy to know it. Otherwise, I will always celebrate autumn at the gardens!
