The Mesoamerican City of Teotihuacan

Teotihuacan is a Pre-Columbian City located in the Sub Valley, about 30 miles to the northeast of the present day Mexico City. It boasts some of the most significant architectural pyramids built in the Americas before the arrival of the conquering Spaniards.

The city features complex multi-family residences, indicating a society that was highly hierarchical. It also features what is known as the avenue of the dead, with its exceptionally well-preserved murals. Archaeologists have discovered ceramic items and obsidian tools that the city exported to the rest of the Mesoamerican cities.

Take a look at the following facts about the city;

1. It was established at around 100 BC and continued its existence up to around 550 AD

2. Continuous construction went on up to about 250 AD. During its apogee (1st century AD), it is estimated that the city was home to about 125,000, making it the 6th largest city during its time.

3. Here is a good one...it started off as a religious center, but later it would become an important commercial hub, having even multi-storey building to house large populations.

4. Possible residents of the city are Totonac, Otomi and Nahua peoples of the Mesoamerica.

5. The city was inscribed into the UNESCO world heritage sites in 1987.

If this destination is not on your bucket list, then you need to add it. It is one of the few places in the Americas that can paint a beautiful past of the 'New World'.
