Sitting on a hill in Umbria is a modest medieval village wherein a Catholic saint’s history is celebrated all year round.

Get a Glimpse on the Life of St. Francis in Assisi, Italy

The Italian town of Assisi is world-renowned as St. Francis’ birthplace, so it’s common for travelers to see numerous historical, artistic and religious travel attractions in this part of Umbria.

Aside from the usual fairs and exhibits that are prepared for its thousands of visitors, Assisi primarily takes you to back to the Middle Ages with the medieval stores and residences lining its cobblestone lanes and streets.

Of course, the St. Francis Basilica is one of the points of interest that you ought to check out, and this is especially recommended by Daily Mail UK Travel friar contributor Alessandro Brustenghi (“Heavenly Assisi:  The Singing Monk and His Love for Umbria’s Most Beautiful Hilltop Town”).

Here’s an excerpt of his travel article:

Within the large Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli is the Porzuincola, the little church that was given to Francis by Benedictine monks… The little church has been preserved exactly as it was, and it's important because it was here that St Francis founded the Order of Friars Minor (the Franciscans), and it has been with us ever since… Another important site to visit is the Hermitage of the Carceri in the mountains… This can be reached by a beautiful walk. Here you will find the cave where Francis prayed, and it was around this cave that the Hermitage was built into the rocks. It's a spectacular place. Anyone coming to Assisi should also visit the church of San Damiano. It's a mysterious and beautiful place which, at the time of St Francis, was falling into ruin. The road down to it from Assisi is very steep and passes fields of olive trees. You can appreciate the beautiful Spoletan valley as you walk down.
